FAQs
So how does Tandem work?
Tandem starts around noon on Friday and ends on Saturday afternoon. First, we all gather at the nation, hop on the bus we’re renting, and head up to Gothenburg. Once there, we meet up with the other competing nations, student unions, and student organisations before the race begins. Every organisation uses one Tandem bike each with two people biking at a time. Each pair takes a short leg on the way down to Lund where the final finish line is at Lundagård. As we go, we will stop occasionally and have really big outdoor discos.
Who can enter the Tandem?
Anyone who is a student and a member of Studentlund can enter. You don’t have to be active at the nation and you actually do not even have to be a member of Blekingska! Although, if you’re not a member of Blekingska, you should of course become one, according to us ;) But there’s no need for it for Tandem.
How many people are taking part in Tandem?
Blekingska normally has around 30-50 people. The other organisations have a similar number of people that go with them on the race. Since almost every nation and student union will take part, it will add up to at least 1000 people. Crazy!
Do I have to bike?
No, you don’t! But you are more than welcome to try it out beforehand and, who knows, maybe you’ll change your mind about it. It’s a bit scary but also rather fun to be on a tandem bike. Your butt will hurt immensely, but you will have your biking friends, so you won’t be alone!
Are you allowed to drink during Tandem?
Yes, in fact most people drink during Tandem. However, you’re not allowed to drink anything that is stronger than 22 percent, so try and keep it to cider and beer. The goal is indeed to have a crazy party, but not to get totally messed up and potentially be a danger to yourself and others. At least one hour before it’s your time to bike, you will have to pause your drinking.
Why should I do this utterly crazy and potentially completely derailed thing?
Tandem is truly a once (maximum twice) in a lifetime experience. Plus, no Tandem is like your first. It’s a chance to both experience some of the craziest parts of Lund’s student life, and see the beautiful Swedish west coast. It is without doubt a bit exhausting, but many before you have survived and returned happily to Lund after Tandem. Talk to someone who has been to Tandem and ask if they recommend it! Most people usually think it’s something you shouldn’t miss, even if you might not really want to do it every time it happens. However, it’s absolutely best to do it early on in your studies, since after that, your thesis might cause a few problems (hehe).
